Jon Stewart Mocks CNN’s Coverage of the Baltimore Riots
(Entertainment Weekly) – “Elvis leading a herd of Orthodox Jewish unicorns through a city street, that would be hard to believe,” Stewart said in response. “Ferguson was just a few months ago, and you were talking about it.”
Stewart also criticized CNN for focusing much of its weekend broadcasting on Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. While host Cecily Strong crushed it, Stewart pointed out there was actual news happening some 40 miles away in Baltimore, even as the dinner took place. Correspondent Jessica Williams also did a spot on imitation of Elizabeth Banks’ character in The Hunger Games, playing the show’s “senior civil unrest correspondent.”
The riots throughout Baltimore were sparked by the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old who died days after suffering a spinal cord injury while in police custody. Maryland’s governor, Larry Horgan, called on the National Guard to assist with the protests, which took a destructive turn in recent days, as cars were set on fire, stores were looted and many were injured.
