Bumgarner Strikes Out Ten, Suffers First Loss

San Francisco, CA – One inning got away from him. Madison Bumgarner struck out ten a season-high, this season. But did not come away with the win. The Giants fell 6-2 to the Marlins who lead the series 2-1. After a solid performance Bumgarner’s mistakes in the fourth proved costly when Miami scored three runs.

“That’s way too many pitches for five innings,” said Bumgarner who was up to 99 pitches before his exit. “I’ve got to get my pitches down and find a way to get quicker outs. They might not have been bad pitches, but they were the wrong pitch.”

Bumgarner unraveled when he surrendered a solo home run to Marcell Ozuna to leadoff the inning. He fanned J.T. Realmuto and yielded a RBI double to Jeff Baker scoring in Realmuto. Bumgarner forced Michael Morse to ground out but gave up another RBI double to Adeiny Hechavarria making it a 3-0 game.

“That was a nice win against a great pitcher,” Miami manager Mike Redmond said. “Ozuna got us started there with a big home run.”

Pitching coach, Dave Righetti came out to the mound to chat with his ace. Bumgarner struck out the next two batters to end the frame and settled down to retire the next three batters. But his night ended early. He tossed five innings, gave up five hits, three runs, two walks, one home run struck out ten.

“He did have good stuff, the strikeouts showed that,” said Giants manger Bruce Bochy. He just made three to four mistakes and they didn’t miss them.”

Tonight was his first loss when striking out at least ten batters in a game, he entered tonight’s outing with a 17-0 record in such contests. Bumgarner did find success in striking out power slugger Giancarlo Stanton. He became the first pitcher since Cincinnati Red’s Mike Leake to strike out Stanton three times in a game.

Justin Maxwell got the Giants offense going with a leadoff double in the fifth. Brandon Crawford followed with a RBI single to get the Giants on the board. Maxwell made a diving catch in the first frame preventing what could’ve been a run scored. His athletic defense ended the inning stranding one runner.

The Marlins added on three more runs in the eighth off Jean Machi. He fanned Stanton to leadoff the inning. Ozuna singled and Realmuto’s sacrifice bunt advanced both runners. Donovan Solano cleared the bases with a two-run double and a overturned call brought in the insurance run extending Miami’s lead 6-1.

A call was overturned keeping the Marlins on base when the umpire ruled Hechavarria safe at first instead of the original call that he grounded out to second baseman Panik to first baseman Brandon Belt. Miami challenged the play and after review, the call was overturned. Hechavarria’s infield single drove in D. Solano with the Marlins sixth run.

Notes – Hunter Pence has been anxious to return to the lineup but first he has to complete a few rehab assignment. After being aggressive with his workouts in batting practice, Pence didn’t disappoint in his debut game with the River Cats in Sacramento. He went 0-for-2 but kept it entertaining when the first fly ball was hit toward him in right field.

Pence raced to make a catch with his cap flying off. The next inning he drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. It’s been almost two months since he fractured his left forearm in Spring Training. Pence has a lot of time to make up and that process begins now with several minor league games to be played before returning to the Giants.

“It’s been a long journey, for sure,” said Pence . “Having an injury that not too many people have had, I didn’t realize the amount of work rehab really is, and how long it was going to be, and how painful. It’s just a long process.”

“It was great,” referring to his first game. “I was really amped and I was pretty excited. I hardly slept the night before, just adrenaline. I had to remind myself, ‘Hey, you’ve played this game before. Calm down.’ But I was really pumped.”

Special to The Post

At Tuesday night’s Council meeting, the Vallejo City Council appointed Beverli Marshall as the interim city manager. Her tenure in the City Manager’s Office began today, Wednesday, April 10.

Mayor Robert McConnell praised Marshall’s extensive background, noting her “wide breadth of experience in many areas that will assist the City and its citizens in understanding the complexity of the many issues that must be solved” in Vallejo.

Current City Manager Michael Malone, whose official departure is slated for April 18, expressed his well wishes. “I wish the City of Vallejo and Interim City Manager Marshall all the best in moving forward on the progress we’ve made to improve service to residents.” Malone expressed his hope that the staff and Council will work closely with ICM Marshall to “ensure success and prosperity for the City.”

According to the Vallejo Sun, Malone stepped into the role of interim city manager in 2021 and became permanent in 2022. Previously, Malone served as the city’s water director and decided to retire from city service e at the end of his contract which is April 18.

“I hope the excellent work of City staff will continue for years to come in Vallejo,” he said. “However, recent developments have led me to this decision to announce my retirement.”

When Malone was appointed, Vallejo was awash in scandals involving the housing division and the police department. A third of the city’s jobs went unfilled during most of his tenure, making for a rocky road for getting things done, the Vallejo Sun reported.

At last night’s council meeting, McConnell explained the selection process, highlighting the council’s confidence in achieving positive outcomes through a collaborative effort, and said this afternoon, “The Council is confident that by working closely together, positive results will be obtained.”

While the search for a permanent city manager is ongoing, an announcement is expected in the coming months.

On behalf of the City Council, Mayor McConnell extended gratitude to the staff, citizen groups, and recruitment firm.

“The Council wishes to thank the staff, the citizens’ group, and the recruitment firm for their diligent work and careful consideration for the selection of what is possibly the most important decision a Council can make on behalf of the betterment of our City,” McConnell said.

The Vallejo Sun contributed to this report.
