Supervisor Nate Miley Backs African American Group’s Purchase of City’s Part of Coliseum Complex
“As Oakland continues to navigate through the challenges brought about by a global pandemic, along with the simultaneous outcry for social and economic justice, particularly for the Black community, we need investments in these areas..”
The following is a letter sent by Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley on June 29 to Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.
“I am writing as an Alameda County Supervisor, former Oakland City Councilmember and a nearly 40-year Oakland resident to request the City’s strong consideration of the Oakland African American Sports and Entertainment Group’s (AASEG) interest in the City’s portion of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Complex.
“The AASEG is a group of committed private sector leaders that are passionate about Oakland and our most vulnerable and at-risk residents. The AASEG has demonstrated its commitment to advance the common goals of the community, including but not limited to the areas of community benefits and economic equity for the African American community.
“As Oakland continues to navigate through the challenges brought about by a global pandemic, along with the simultaneous outcry for social and economic justice, particularly for the Black community, we need investments in these areas..
“I believe that Oakland would be challenged to find another group assembled to purchase the Coliseum site that shares in AASEG’s commitment, resources, expertise and dedication to Oakland.
“The AASEG shares in my commitment towards ensuring that the needs of existing Oaklanders are placed at the forefront, while simultaneously revitalizing one of the most underserved communities in the state and providing a world-class destination and tax generating vehicle in the heart of East Oakland.”
