Mike Norris Releases Educational Calendar

Former Oakland A’s Pitcher Mike Norris is invested in promoting positive values and education. He released a new educational calendar that’s aimed at helping children learn subjects such as Math, Science, English, and Nutrition.

“In this day of computers and modern technology, education can be achieved anywhere,” said Norris. “If you can’t afford an iPhone or a calculator, you can use this calendar to learn the subjects. My daughter Miyuri Norris is in high school with a 3.8 GPA and that comes from hard work.”

Norris, who has been honored in the past by Congresswoman Barbara Lee and other local government officials for his efforts, and continues to work on ways to increase his impact with youth.

For the past 13 years, he has offered the community wellness program, which focuses on after school tutoring and mentoring l. The program was designed to help students become leaders and role models in their schools.

“It’s great to see the work that Mike Norris has accomplished despite his past personal conflicts,” said Dr. Angela Wheeler, a consultant and friend of Norris. “Seeing the work he has done with Oakland Unified School District and how the children have responded to him is inspiring.”

He has also started a Bay Area baseball league for boys between ages 8-11 years old. Beginning this May, the league target youth in Richmond, San Francisco, Richmond, Alameda, San Leandro, Oakland and Marin County.

“I want to mix the affluent kids with the non-affluent kids,” said Norris. “Most kids are stunted by social growth because they never leave their block, so maybe this can help break down barriers for future generations and uniting these kids together.”

Sales from the calendar will provide funding for Coach Ralph Walker’s’ Don Grant Alameda Point’ Youth Track Club.

East Oakland Organizer Needed

The East Oakland Stadium Alliance (EOSA) is seeking an Oakland-based grassroots organizer for a short-term engagement to help grow and mobilize our coalition! Comprised of local businesses, workers, labor organizations, and community members, we are deeply concerned about the Oakland A’s proposal to leave the Coliseum site in East Oakland and build a new stadium at the port. An ideal candidate has on-the-ground campaign field experience, a strong awareness of Oakland and Alameda County political figures, and deep ties to East and West Oakland communities. Being a local resident of Oakland is a plus.

Employment with EOSA is a part-time role and will last for a minimum of four months with an opportunity to extend longer. Transportation and cell phone use would be reimbursed and candidates of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

If interested, please send a cover letter and resume to Emily Penrod, For more info about EOSA, visit our website and check us out on Twitter @AllianceOakland.
