JAMTOWN, A Disneyland for Basketball Enthusiasts

Published

on

Viewing the website’s homepage displaying a shadow of a man in slow motion, body spinning, forward flipping, passing between the legs, soaring through the air and then jamming the basketball in the hole – tells what JAMTOWN is all about.

And on that ‘Darryl Dawkins dunk’ introduction to the Bay Area’s first premium indoor basketball facility, is where ‘you will come amazed and leave happy.’

JAMTOWNis the place to watch, play, and train. It avowals state of the art equipment for professional training and preparation, exceptional coaching by experts, support of individual goals to improve their game, and welcomes all ages and levels.

Founded by married couple, Eric and Laura Lamison, JAMTOWN was born after a year’s labor and planning. The goal was to ‘create a place for families and athletes to play.’ It has been described as the Disneyland for basketball enthusiasts.

“I wanted to have a one stop spot,” said Eric Lamison, who works at Cisco Systems. This entrepreneur team plans to host basketball and volleyball tournaments on most weekends accommodating national and international teams, create jobs for Oakland residents at the facility, and bring in foot traffic to local businesses in the surrounding area.

Located at 31 4th St. in Oakland, the venue is right off the 880 Freeway. Clients can expect: Four full 84X50 regulation maple courts with half-court and single-court configurations, seating for 100 fans per court, ample parking in a private lot and on the street.

The facility can also accommodate birthday parties with professional acrobatic slam dunking, drop in pick-up games and shoot around times, men and women seasonal adult leagues and elite camps with special guest trainers.

Since it’s opening on July 7, JAMTOWN has already billeted six tournaments, including: A Poor Boy’s Dream, East Bay Swag, and Bay Area Sports – Tournament of Champions. Recently Harrison Barnes, Golden State Warriors’ Forward, reserved the facility to allow youth to partake in a day of fun in basketball. There is opportunity for visiting (NBA) teams to practice there as well.

The staff/coaches have been personally selected on assurance of providing the best service to JAMTOWN’s customers. Sam Moses, General Manager and veteran coach, was recruited by one of JAMOWN’s investors because of his passion for the sport and skills as a trainer.

“I want to ensure that there is a space for the youth, but especially the Oakland youth, to build skills, confidence, and pride in themselves and our sport,” said Moses, who has trained athletes in Cal Stars, one of Nike Girls’ Elite Youth (GEY) basketball programs in the nation.

Youth patrons of JAMTOWN can expect to be welcomed and guided. Seasoned basketball player Randall Harding, who is assistant manager and coach, teaches necessary skills to be successful on the court and in life. His commitment is to build confidence, work ethic, love of the game and be a big brother. Harding added, “seeing the kid’s improvement throughout the season… gives me that sense of purpose.”

According to JAMTOWN’s owners, future plans are to expand their outreach to cheer competitions, wrestling, cross fitness, and working with non-profits to present after-school programs.

Special to The Post

At Tuesday night’s Council meeting, the Vallejo City Council appointed Beverli Marshall as the interim city manager. Her tenure in the City Manager’s Office began today, Wednesday, April 10.

Mayor Robert McConnell praised Marshall’s extensive background, noting her “wide breadth of experience in many areas that will assist the City and its citizens in understanding the complexity of the many issues that must be solved” in Vallejo.

Current City Manager Michael Malone, whose official departure is slated for April 18, expressed his well wishes. “I wish the City of Vallejo and Interim City Manager Marshall all the best in moving forward on the progress we’ve made to improve service to residents.” Malone expressed his hope that the staff and Council will work closely with ICM Marshall to “ensure success and prosperity for the City.”

According to the Vallejo Sun, Malone stepped into the role of interim city manager in 2021 and became permanent in 2022. Previously, Malone served as the city’s water director and decided to retire from city service e at the end of his contract which is April 18.

“I hope the excellent work of City staff will continue for years to come in Vallejo,” he said. “However, recent developments have led me to this decision to announce my retirement.”

When Malone was appointed, Vallejo was awash in scandals involving the housing division and the police department. A third of the city’s jobs went unfilled during most of his tenure, making for a rocky road for getting things done, the Vallejo Sun reported.

At last night’s council meeting, McConnell explained the selection process, highlighting the council’s confidence in achieving positive outcomes through a collaborative effort, and said this afternoon, “The Council is confident that by working closely together, positive results will be obtained.”

While the search for a permanent city manager is ongoing, an announcement is expected in the coming months.

On behalf of the City Council, Mayor McConnell extended gratitude to the staff, citizen groups, and recruitment firm.

“The Council wishes to thank the staff, the citizens’ group, and the recruitment firm for their diligent work and careful consideration for the selection of what is possibly the most important decision a Council can make on behalf of the betterment of our City,” McConnell said.

The Vallejo Sun contributed to this report.
