D-backs Walk Giants To Victory
San Francisco, CA – Wade Miley lasted two innings before he was replaced by the bullpen. The Giants scored in the first two innings, while Miley allowed three runs on five hits and four walks. San Francisco continued their success at home by beating the D-Backs 5-1.
“We faced a good pitcher but he was off tonight,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “Petit threw a complete game, he had one hiccup but was hitting his spots tonight.”
San Francisco got off to a great start, Yusmerio Petit retired the first nine batters he faced before giving up the only run to Arizona. Ender Inciarte hit a solo home run to leadoff the fourth and splashed in McCovey Cove making it a 3-1 game. But the Giants offense was unstoppable against the struggling pitcher.
Miley walked in San Francisco’s first run in the first inning. Angel Pagan leadoff the frame with a single, Joe Panik followed with a single and Miley loaded the bases with a walk to Pablo Sandoval. Andrew Susac walked making it a 1-0 game.
In the second, Petit hit a single, Pagan beat out a bunt single and was safe at first. With two on and one out, Miley loaded the bases again with three hits in one inning. Buster Posey hit into a fielder’s choice scoring in Petit. Miley loaded the bases again walking Hunter Pence.
“I didn’t think he was throwing very good,” said D-backs manager Kirk Gibson. “And I think he had a lot of pitches, so I made the decision to move on and get somebody else in there that could maybe shut them down.”
After he walked Sandoval, the Giants went up 3-0. They added on two more runs in the sixth. Blanco leadoff the inning with a single, and Pagan hit a single. Panik who has evolved at second base, grounded into a fielder’s choice and Blanco scored. Pagan moved to third on a fielding error in right field.
“I actually felt really, really good,” Miley said. “That’s the most frustrating part. I felt so good. I felt really good in the bullpen. I thought I had life there. I really couldn’t execute a fastball. I couldn’t throw it anywhere close to where I wanted to throw it.”
Posey’s sacrifice fly scored in Pagan. San Francisco extended their lead 5-1. By the eighth, Pagan and Panik owned Arizona. Pagan went 4-for-5 while Panik went 5-for-5 his first career-high night. Combined both Pagan and Panik had nine hits tonight.
“I made good pitches early in the game, trying to stay in the same spot,” said Petit. “I felt good on both sides of the plate, I tried to throw strikes every time because I don’t like walks.”
Panik is the first Giants rookie to record five hits in a game since Fred Lewis did so on May 13, 2007 at Colorado. Petit became the third San Francisco pitcher to toss a complete game while throwing less than 90 pitches. He went the distance in the ninth. And received standing ovation after retiring all three batters to end the game.
“Honestly, Petit threw a heck of a game, and he really made it easy to get our offense going,” Panik said. “You never know what the day is going to bring. You’ve got to keep working and hopefully everything turns out. Tonight was one of those nights everything turned out.”
The Giants won their seventh-straight home game, which matches their longest home winning streak since April 8-22, 2013. The Giants starting pitchers at home have posted a 1.06 ERA with 66 strikeouts in their last eight games at AT&T Park.
