“Best Man” Sequel Returns with Great Expectations for the Holidays

We have patiently anticipated the big screen return of the sophisticated, successful, sexy cast of Malcolm D. Lee’s Best Man franchise for many years, now the wait is over!

< p>Best Man Holiday, opening Nov. 15 from Universal Pictures, continues with college friends, turned upwardly mobile adults: Lance (Morris Chestnut), Mia (Monica Calhoun), Harper (Taye Diggs), Robyn (Sanaa Lathan), Julian (Harold Perrineau), Candace (Regina Hall), Shelby (Melissa DeSousa), Quentin (Terrence Howard), Jordan (Nia Long), and newcomer Brian (Eddie Cibrian), reunited for a Christmas gathering to make the holidays brighter, or will they?

Since we last saw them, life has brought about significant change, mostly for the better.

For starters, new looks for Candace and Julian, in addition to their roles and responsibilities as husband and wife. Robyn is huge with child, Quentin much the same with ego. Jordan has a steady beau, Shelby has gone wild and good girl Mia is still holding down that fort.

Unlike many horror stories of money woes for professional ball players, Lance has maintained bank, big time.

A beautiful film by any measure, equally, up close they all looked spectacular during press interviews in Los Angeles, ebullient with gratitude to be back for the sequel. There are surprises this time around and I’m not here to spoil them; you’ll just have to see for yourself.

Filmmaker Lee (UNDERCOVER BROTHER, ROLL BOUNCE, SOUL MEN, WELCOME HOME ROSCOE JENKINS) relies upon his fluid ability as a storyteller, providing language complimentary to a loyal cast, several of whom saw their careers spring board from the original 1999 film, The Best Man.

Roll call:

Since the first Best Man, Harold Perrineau was cast in HBO’s incredibly popular prison drama OZ. His credits thereafter include THE MATRIX franchise, 28 WEEKS LATER, ABC-TV’s Lost and HBO’s Sons of Anarchy among others.

Nia Long already beloved by legions of fans before coming to The Best Man franchise continued with roles in STIGMATA, ALFIE, BIG MOMMA’S franchise, ARE WE THERE YET franchise, network TV’s Judging Amy, Third Watch, Boston Legal, The Cleveland Show and Showtime’s award-winning House of Lies.

Regina Hall has developed a penchant for comedic film roles in the SCARY MOVIE franchise, THINK LIKE A MAN franchise, MALIBU’S MOST WANTED, FIRST SUNDAY; network TV’s Ally McBeal, Second Generation Wayans along with dramatic parts in LAW ABIDING CITIZEN and TV’s Law & Order.

Sanaa Lathan has worked between film, television and stage. Her film credits include LOVE & BASKETBALL, BROWN SUGAR, OUT OF TIME, ALIEN VS. PREDATOR, SOMETHING NEW, THE FAMILY THAT PREYS, CONTAGION and HBO’s Disappearing Acts; TV’s Nip/Tuck, Family Guy, The Cleveland Show, Showtime’s Boss; Broadway’s A Raisin in the Sun and Meet Vera Stark.

Taye Diggs is too a triple threat with film, television, and stage accomplishments sitting comfortably under his belt. Prior to joining the BEST MAN franchise, he wowed and tantalized in the big screen adaptation of Terry McMillan’s HOW STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BACK. Subsequent film credits include BROWN SUGAR, CHICAGO, MALIBU’S MOST WANTED, and BAGGAGE CLAIM; among his TV credits are Ally McBeal, Kevin Hill, and ABC’s Private Practice and; stage credits include Rent, Chicago and Wicked.

Oscar-nominated, multiple award-winning Terrence Howard accelerated his career’s trajectory with roles in HART’S WAR, BIKER BOYZ, CRASH, RAY, FOUR BROTHERS, PRIDE, AUGUST RUSH, IRON MAN, FIGHTING, THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, RED TAILS, THE BUTLER, PRISONERS and others.

Excerpts from our Best Man Holiday conversation follow –

What is your account of this sweet, sentimental franchise?

Sanaa Lathan (Robyn): I just marveled the whole time at the fact that nine people, 15 years ago, were kind of starting out in their career, nine black people, and 15 years later we were all thriving. We are all still in this business that we all know is risky and unpredictable for any actor let alone a black actor. The fact that we could all come together again, we all have our health, and we’re all relatively sane (laughter), I mean it’s one thing to get like three people back together, but nine people? I think that’s amazing and I don’t look upon that lightly. This is a testament to some kind of faith in all of us in terms of pursuing this career, in terms of living life. For me, I just felt like it was a blessing to have all of these characters’ lives kind represented again. To have these stories being told again, for us, as a community.

I think one of the reasons why the first movie worked so well is because we (African Americans) rarely get to see these people; we don’t get to see ourselves reflected so well, so differently and, in such a variety of ways on film. Malcolm does that so well. It was just a great blessing to be able for this story to come together initially and to get back together.

Sanaa and Taye, is there shorthand between the two of you given your opportunity to work together on other projects over the years?

Taye Diggs (Harper): As far as the shorthand between us, speaking for myself, I feel like we were very fortunate in the first film because we had an immediate bond with each other; this is the type of film that sets the stage for great friendships, you know. When we made the first one, I didn’t know a lot of the cast members. I was familiar with Sanaa but we all became pretty tight after that and maintained relationships. When we got together for the second one, we were able to pick up right where we left off; I mean, without patting ourselves on the back, I also think that synergy comes with being experienced actors. The director did us all a favor by picking up fifteen years later with the characters so we all have matured as human beings and as actors.

Sanaa: We didn’t have to play the fifteen years because it was fifteen …

Taye: We were able to use our life experiences and put that forth toward the characters so that helped with the shorthand, and, it was just fun.

Malcolm D. Lee allowed both of you to be vulnerable in your character portrayals; it came across authentically, especially the bedroom scene when Robyn and Harper were confessing to each other their fears and expectations, your shortcomings…the on screen vulnerability was appreciably palpable.

Sanaa: Oh, I love that, that’s great feedback. I think Malcolm is a great writer; you’d be surprised that there are not a lot of good scripts in circulation. There’s a reason why there are only a handful of great movies because I think it’s hard to write something good. Malcolm did a great job with the sequel, taking all these characters with their growth, wherever they were in their lives, and inter-weaving their stories.

Did either of you have any idea this film would factor greatly in launching and establishing your careers?

Sanaa: I was so happy to get the job …

Taye: Yeah, just to be working …

Will either of you return to Broadway soon?

Sanaa: Not that I know of…

Taye: Yeah, I want to…as soon as time permits.

Against All Odds: Mary Jackson’s Journey to NASA Engineer

When we talk about breaking barriers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the name Mary Jackson deserves a place at the top of the list.

Jackson was born in 1921 in Hampton, Virginia, a place that would later become central to her groundbreaking work. From an early age, she showed a strong aptitude for math and science—subjects that, at the time, were not widely encouraged for African American women. But Jackson was not one to be limited by expectations. She earned degrees in mathematics and physical science from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), setting the foundation for a career that would change history.

Before joining NASA, Jackson worked as a teacher and later as a research mathematician at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the agency that eventually became NASA. Like many African American women of her time, she began her career as a “human computer,” performing complex calculations by hand. It was in this environment that she worked alongside brilliant minds like Katherine Johnson, forming part of a powerful group of African American women whose calculations helped launch America into space.

Jackson’s life took a significant turn when she was offered the opportunity to work in a wind tunnel, a facility used to test the effects of air moving over aircraft structures. It was here that her passion for engineering truly took flight. However, there was a challenge: to become an engineer, she needed to take advanced courses that were only offered at a segregated high school.

Jackson did something truly remarkable. She petitioned the city of Hampton for permission to attend those classes. She didn’t accept “no” as an answer. And she won.

In 1958, Jackson became NASA’s first African American female engineer.

But Jackson’s impact didn’t stop there.

Later in her career, she chose to step away from her engineering position—not because she couldn’t continue, but because she wanted to make a difference. She moved into roles focused on equal opportunity, working to ensure that women and minorities had access to the same opportunities she fought so hard to get.

Jackson’s story gained wider recognition through the book and film Hidden Figures, which highlighted the contributions of African American women at NASA. But long before the spotlight found her, Jackson was doing the work—quietly, persistently, and brilliantly.

Jackson retired from Langley in 1985. Among her many honors were an Apollo Group Achievement Award and being named Langley’s Volunteer of the Year in 1976. She served as the chair of one of the center’s annual United Way campaigns and a member of the National Technical Association (the oldest African American technical organization in the United States).

She and her husband Levi had an open-door policy for young Langley recruits trying to gain their footing in a new town and a new career. A 1976 Langley Researcher profile might have done the best job capturing Mary’s spirit and character, calling her a “gentlelady, wife and mother, humanitarian and scientist.”

For Jackson, science and service went hand in hand.

She died on Feb. 11, 2005, at age 83, at a convalescent home in Hampton, Virginia.

Mayor Barbara Lee Declares ‘Delroy Lindo Day,’ Presents Acclaimed Actor with Key to the City

Oakland honored one of its most distinguished residents on May 6 as Mayor Barbara Lee presented acclaimed actor Delroy Lindo with the Key to the City and an official proclamation declaring “Delroy Lindo Day.”

The event, titled “Rooted in Legacy: Honoring Delroy Lindo,” took place at Oakland City Hall and brought together community leaders, artists, and young people for an evening centered on storytelling, cultural pride, and intergenerational connection.

Lindo, a critically acclaimed artist who lives in Oakland, was recognized for his extensive contributions to film, television, and theater, as well as his impact on the global African diaspora. Most recently the Oscar-nominated artist was recognized for his phenomenal role as a bluesman in Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” a winner both critically and at the box office.

His celebrated body of work included roles in “Unprisoned,” “Malcolm X”, “Clockers,” “Get Shorty,” and ”Da 5 Bloods,” among others.

“He’s brought depth, inspiration, and authenticity to the screen,” said Lee.

The program highlighted both Lindo’s artistic legacy and his influence as a mentor. A centerpiece of the evening was an intimate fireside conversation between MLee and Lindo.

“I am a living, breathing example of somebody who has achieved the American Dream,” said Lindo. “The other side of that is I walk through the world as a Black man of African descent.”

At 5 years of age, Lindo played King Balthazar in a Nativity play. And years later on Easter of 1973 in New York the Negro Ensemble Company’s play, “The River Niger” left a great impact on him.

“Seeing that production and so many Blacks in the audience, gave me an understanding that maybe I could have a career as an actor,” said Lindo.

Students from the Oakland School for the Arts delivered powerful monologues, adding a dynamic and emotional layer to the program. The students’ instructor, Tavia Percia, chairman of the school’s theatre department, watched the performance proudly. Their performances emphasized the importance of arts education and demonstrated the next generation of talent inspired by figures like Lindo.

Five young men from All Tied Up Academy had the honor of presenting the “Rooted in Legacy” plaque to Lindo with Lee.

The evening also featured a cinematic showcase of Lindo’s work, offering a retrospective glimpse into his decades-long career.

The Golden State Warriors presented Lindo with a custom jersey, symbolizing the city’s appreciation for his contributions both on and off the screen.

The highlight of the evening came as  Lee formally presented Lindo with the Key to the City and read the proclamation establishing “Delroy Lindo Day.” The recognition marked not only his artistic achievements but also his enduring connection to Oakland and his commitment to community engagement.

Celebrities, including filmmaker Ryan Coogler, congratulated Lindo via a video presentation. Lindo did not hold back the tears of gratitude. “I carry Oakland with me wherever I go,” said. Lindo, who is Jamaican via the UK, said he chose the Bay Area to call home with his wife and raise his son.

When young men who grew up with his son entered the council chambers, Lindo welcomed them to the stage for a hug and acknowledgement. “These young men are all honorable. I’ve watched them grow up, and they are the future,” he said. “These are three people that give me hope for this country.”

Addressing the audience, Lindo said, “You are part of the infrastructure of my life. My life would not be as it is without you. You give me more than I give you. Wherever I go, I bring Oakland with me.”

“Hold onto your dreams, particularly now in this country being fed the constant narrative that ‘we are less than,’ because we know we are more than. And kudos to Mayor Lee at the forefront for decades repping us for Oakland and America.”

“Everyone, hold fast to your purpose and charge as a human being and to the young; go for yours!”

Lindo thanked his many fans, friends, and family in the audience. Attendees included broadcaster Dave Clark, attorney John Burris, former Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson, Dr. Albert Brooks who delivered his son, and First African Methodist Episcopal Church  Rev. Rodney Smith. Screenwriter David Webb Peoples, who gave him his first film role in Australia, “The Blood of Heroes, was also in attendance.

Building Bridges of Support: How AAPI Equity Alliance Is Strengthening California’s Anti-Hate Network

After hitting their car, the other driver pulled alongside them and mocked them using a racist Asian accent. Then, he threatened to kill them. The situation escalated when the man returned while the family was waiting for police and assaulted Roque’s father, fracturing his rib and choking her mother before bystanders intervened.

When Aurelle Garner stepped out of her car one summer evening and saw a group of youths marching down her street, her stomach dropped.

What had begun as slurs hurled at her and her transgender children at a local park had escalated to violent pounding on their front door. Garner said that, before that incident, local law enforcement had repeatedly minimized her reports of harassment.

It was not until she contacted the Legal Department at The LGBTQ Center Long Beach that her family finally found help.

“I don’t know where we’d be if it weren’t for their help,” Garner, who lives in Southern California, said. “They didn’t just give legal advice. They helped us navigate a system that had otherwise dismissed us.”

That support exists because The LGBTQ Center Long Beach does not work in isolation.

The Center partners with the AAPI Equity Alliance under California’s Stop the Hate program, a statewide coalition aimed at preventing hate and supporting survivors.

As the Los Angeles County Regional Lead, AAPI Equity Alliance works with the Center and dozens of other community-based organizations to connect people to legal aid, mental health services, and support. The programs also work in tandem with CA vs Hate, the state’s anti-hate hotline and virtual reporting system that connects people across California with organizations like the LGBTQ Center Long Beach – that provide support services

Garner’s experience illustrates the kind of harm that often falls outside the narrow legal definition of a hate crime but still leaves families traumatized and unsafe. It also shows how AAPI Equity Alliance’s leadership in the Stop the Hate ecosystem translates state funding and policy into real, on-the-ground support.

The situation escalated when the man returned while the family was waiting for police and assaulted Roque’s father, fracturing his rib and choking her mother before bystanders intervened.

“The police arrived long after it was over,” Roque told California Black Media (CBM). “By then, the damage was already done.”

The following day, Roque’s family was connected to the Filipino Migrant Center (FMC), a community-based organization that has received Stop the Hate funding and works within the broader AAPI Equity Alliance network. FMC provided immediate support — helping the family navigate legal options, organizing emergency financial assistance to cover medical bills and missed work, and offering emotional and community care while the criminal case unfolded.

“But the process is long and complicated. When you need help right away, that delay is a huge barrier. FMC was there immediately,”Rogue said.

The criminal case did not result in the accountability the family hoped for. But Roque said the support she received transformed her relationship to her community and to advocacy.

“Before this, I wasn’t involved in organizing at all,” she said. “Through this process, I realized my voice mattered. FMC helped turn something traumatic into a way to support others and push for change.”

Stories like Garner’s and Roque’s are part of a much larger reckoning that began at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, when Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country experienced a surge in harassment, discrimination, and violence fueled by racist rhetoric.

In response, AAPI Equity Alliance partnered with San Francisco’s Chinese for Affirmative Action and the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University to launch Stop AAPI Hate in March 2020. Since then, the project has collected more than 9,000 reports nationwide documenting incidents ranging from verbal harassment and workplace discrimination to physical assault and child bullying.

“People tend to think about hate only when it turns violent,” said Kiran Bhalla of AAPI Equity Alliance. “But there are everyday acts of discrimination that people endure constantly. Without some kind of recourse, that harm just keeps going.”

The data helped spur unprecedented action in California. In 2021, the State Legislature passed the $165.5 million Asian Pacific Islander Equity Budget, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom. Of that total, $110 million was dedicated to victim services, education, and outreach. In August 2023, California invested an additional $40 million to expand California’s Stop the Hate program to serve a broader range of communities affected by hate and discrimination.

Today, the program supports roughly 100 nonprofit organizations statewide. As Los Angeles County Regional Lead, AAPI Equity Alliance coordinates grantees, facilitates cross-community collaboration, and helps ensure services reach those most impacted.

A recently released survey estimated that approximately 3.1 million Californians directly experienced hate, with Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders, Black or African Americans, and other communities of color, including Asian Americans, among those most likely to experience hate.

Black Californians, however, remain the most targeted group when it comes to reported hate crimes.

Nearly 48% of Asian American and Pacific Islander adults in California reported experiencing a hate incident in 2024, according to Stop AAPI Hate research. Most incidents were not criminal, leaving survivors with little recourse through the legal system.

That gap is precisely where AAPI Equity Alliance and its partners focus their work. The Stop the Hate framework prioritizes non-carceral responses, recognizing that policing alone often fails survivors and can further harm Black, brown, and immigrant communities.

Instead, the work centers on data and research, policy advocacy, community care, and public education. Through school-based programs, legal advocacy, emergency assistance, and survivor-centered services, the network aims to interrupt cycles of harm before they escalate.

For survivors like Garner and Roque, that support has made the difference between enduring trauma in silence and finding a path toward healing and collective power.

“When people experience hate, there’s often a profound sense of isolation,” Bhalla said. “This work helps people get back to school, back to work, back to their lives. It reminds them they’re not alone.”
