Sharon Turner Retires, Still Hopes for the Children

Marin City resident Sharon Turner was recently honored with a retirement party on Friday, Dec. 5 at the Hannah Gallery after retiring from 40 years of working as an administrator, director, and educator in the community.

Throughout her work, Turner has touched many people. She worked for the Marin City Multi-Service Center from 1970 to 1990 and served as executive director. She was also the Family Self-Sufficiency Coordinator with the Marin County Housing Authority until 2005, and was Project Manager for the Marin City Network.

Pastor Marcus Small gave the opening prayer and thanked Turner for all the work she has done in the community.

Supervisor Kate Sears presented her with a declaration from the county, saying, “Turner has the perfect opportunity to focus on the community and how we can work to improve it,” and give our children an equal opportunity for education.

Turner has always worked to empower the community and mentored many people including Felecia Gaston, director of Performing Stars of Marin, who previously worked as Turner’s administrative assistant. Turner welcomed Gaston into her personal family and helped guide her in the nonprofit world.

Turner was also an inspiration to Oshalla Diane Marcus, helping the artist to remain true to herself.

She has been a “connector and builder,” said John Young, director of Marin Grassroots, the multipurpose center started by Turner that provides job opportunities in the community.

Turner expressed her thanks to everyone that shared their love for her. Her work has been rewarding, she said, but her heart breaks in trying to find a solution to bring about change for young people to realize the opportunities available to them.

“Nobody really has the answer to how to fix this, and how to change it,” Turner said. “The schools will need all the help and support we can give.”

Challenging everyone, Turner added that a new generation of people is needed to carry on the work.
