Save Life Youth Summit Seeks to Reduce Youth Gun Violence
Seeking to engage young people in a conversation about gun violence, its impacts and possible solutions, the Save Life Youth Summit will be held Saturday, May 16 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Laney College Student Center, 900 Fallon St. in Oakland.
Oakland youth will be given an opportunity to add their voice towards change, and together explore ways that communities can break the cycle of violence.
Emergency physicians and trauma surgeons at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland and Highland Hospital are among the many community members who are saddened and deeply impacted by every young gunshot victim who is injured or killed in Oakland.
The Summit will include stories about the effects of gun violence on children, families, and community from the perspective of medical providers, former victims, and ex-shooters – with a focus on those who survive their injuries but may live with significant disability and medical complications.
It will also include artistic performances and spoken word; workshops by Oakland Unite and Youth Alive for young people to voice their experiences with violence and ideas about its roots, including issues of conflict resolution, the psycho-emotional impacts of violence, and solutions and alternatives to violence; and an exhibit of community organizations in Oakland and their important work with youth.
UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, Highland Hospital, City of Oakland, Peralta Community College District, and Alameda County Health Care Services Agency are sponsors of the event.
