Residents of Senior Living Facility Fight to Stay in Their Homes
Two days before Thanksgiving, nearly 100 elderly and disabled residents living at Brookdale San Pablo received notice they had 60 days to leave.
Brookdale, which leases the San Pablo facility, is a national corporation that operates 800 senior living facilities in 45 states. The company notified the property owner earlier this year that it would not renew its lease, according to the SF Chronicle.
The owners said they tried to negotiate a new lease but were unable to reach an agreement with Brookdale. Unable to find a now operator, they are putting the property up for sale, according to SF Chronicle repor.
The facility houses between 75 and 80 seniors, some of them disabled.
“If we don’t do something about this greedy, for-profit housing, we will all regret it. This housing system of “profit by any means necessary’ is not normal, fair nor just,” said Carroll Fife of ACCE Action, an organization that is fighting the evictions.
