Public Safety Committee Votes to Cut Ties Between OPD and ICE
Some of the supporters of the resolution to cut OPD ties to ICE.
The City Council´s Public Safety Committee this week unanimously passed Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan’s Resolution directing the City Administrator to immediately terminate an agreement with the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Agency.
Community support for the Resolution included representatives of the Oakland Privacy Commission, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
Kaplan said: “Under the Trump Administration, we have seen the increased use of ICE to target non-criminals, including arresting people dropping their kids off to school. Given that ICE officials have stated their intention to continue to target non-criminals, many in our community feel unsafe coming forward to OPD knowing that they could be in danger of deportation even if they have not committed a crime.
“Therefore, in furtherance of Oakland’s Sanctuary City status, and encouraging cooperation with local law enforcement, I ask that we consider this Resolution to rescind this agreement with ICE.”
Members of the Public Safety Committee expressed their strong support for the resolution, and reinforced the importance of sending the message that Oakland is a Sanctuary City, and should not even give the appearance of colluding with ICE.
The resolution will be voted on by the full City Council at the Tuesday, July 18 City Council Meeting, which starts at 5:30 pm at Oakland City Hall, Council Chambers, 3rd Floor.
