A witness of Malcolm X’s assassination, who says he was never questioned by police, believes authorities tried to help the killer get away from the scene.

During a press conference on Tuesday (July 25), attorney Ben Crump and co-council Ray Hamlin unveiled a new witness and more alleged information on the 1965 assassination, suggesting that authorities covered up a conspiracy to murder Malcolm X, per the New York Post.

Mustafa Hassan, 84, said he was a part of Malcolm X’s security detail and witnessed the shooting at New York’s Audubon Ballroom.

Hassan said he attempted to stop an armed man, later identified as Thomas Hagan or “Talmadge X Hayer,” from fleeing the scene of the assassination. However, police intervened to stop Malcolm X supporters from beating Hayer.

According to the witness, officers asked each other “Is he with us?” as they restrained the killer. Hassan said police appeared to be trying to “assist in [Hayer] getting away.” Police declined to question Hassan despite him remaining at the scene, the witness said during Tuesday’s press conference.

“We will show that the defendants concealed evidence, which gives us a cause of action,” Crump said on Tuesday. “It wasn’t due to a lack of diligence. No one will say that Malcolm’s family had accepted what the government had told them. They always sought the truth.”

On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X delivered a speech at the Audubon Ballroom before he was shot 21 times.

Three men were convicted in the killing, but in 2021, two were exonerated due to shaky evidence.
