Moss goes deep twice, A’s beat the Yankees

Oakland, CA – It’s the best start this franchise has seen since 1990. The Oakland A’s continue their winning ways without two of their top starters. Yet once again, one never knows whose night it will be because with this team, everyone shines.Tonight Bandon Moss went deep twice to back Dan Straily for the 5-2 win over the New York Yankees. Another night of stellar pitching from the A’s, Straily went 6 2/3 innings allowing two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out three.“I’ll take that,” Moss said. “If your able to contribute and drive in runs when you do connect, it’s definitely better off than getting your singles.”

Brandon got the offense going when he hit a two-run homer in the second for the 2-0 lead. The Yankees bats were quiet despite being known as the “Bronx Bombers”. And their starter Phil Hughes didn’t last past four innings after surrendering three runs off four hits.

“I didn’t really have good command of anything,” said Hughes. “Their approach was to be patient tonight, and on a night when I didn’t have good command. I was in a lot of bad counts and couldn’t really find anything to put guys away with.”

The contribution from guys who had been benched due to that last five games being faced by left-handed pitchers were ready to showcase their talents. Without Yoenis Cespedes and Coco Crisp, guys really stepped up when they needed.

John Jaso doubled, singled, walked and drove in two runs. Seth Smith got a free pass in his next four trips to the plate after hitting a single in his first at-bat. And Eric Sogard stole two bases and scored twice.

“It’s big to do this tonight,” said Moss. “Our MVPs so far have probably been Josh Donaldson and Coco. And Cespedes has really been coming on lately, swinging great. It hurts to be without them, so it feels really good to win.”

Brandon now has five hits in his last 40 at-bats and all five have been home runs. After hitting his 11th home run in the eighth on a fly ball to center field, New York had nothing left. Hard to imagine Moss hadn’t started since Wednesday due to so many left-handed pitchers.

“To do that in this park, at night, in the eighth inning (when the ball tends not to travel), that impressive,” Josh Reddick said. “To hit the ball halfway up the batting eye, to do it here in Oakland, that’s no easy feat.”

The Yankees once again rallied back but that wasn’t enough. Mark Teixeira’s sacrifice fly in the six put them on the board. And Jayson Nix RBI single cut the lead down to one in the seventh. Ichiro Suzuki was the only player with more than one hit for New York.

“That’s too much. We’re the Bronx Bombers,” said Teixeria. But give them credit, this is not really a home run hitting ball park anyway. Neither is Seattle, for that matter. We just haven’t gotten it done.”

Oakland Housing and Community Development Department Awards $80.5 Million to Affordable Housing Developments

The City of Oakland’s Housing and Community Development Department (Oakland HCD) announced its awardees for the 2024-2025 New Construction of Multifamily Affordable Housing Notice of Funding Availability (New Construction NOFA) today Five permanently affordable housing developments received awards out of 24 applications received by the Department, with award amounts ranging from $7 million to $28 million.

In a statement released on Jan. 16, Oakland’s HCD stated, “Five New Construction Multifamily Affordable Housing Development projects awarded a total of $80.5 million to develop 583 affordable rental homes throughout Oakland. Awardees will leverage the City’s investments to apply for funding from the state and private entities.”

In December, the office of Rebecca Kaplan, interim District 2 City Councilmember, worked with HCD to allocate an additional $10 Million from Measure U to the funding pool. The legislation also readopted various capital improvement projects including street paving and upgrades to public facilities.

The following Oakland affordable housing developments have been awarded in the current round:

Mandela Station Affordable

238 Affordable Units including 60 dedicated for Homeless/Special Needs

The County of Alameda announced this week that a deal allowing the Oakland Acquisition Company, LLC, (“OAC”) to acquire the County’s 50% undivided interest in the Oakland- Alameda County Coliseum complex is in the final stages of completion.

Oakland has already finalized a purchase and sale agreement with OAC for its interest in the property. OAC’s acquisition of the County’s property interest will achieve two longstanding goals of the County:

The Oakland-Alameda Coliseum complex will finally be under the control of a sole owner with capacity to make unilateral decisions regarding the property; and
The County will be out of the sports and entertainment business, free to focus and rededicate resources to its core safety net

In an October 2024 press release from the City of Oakland, the former Oakland mayor described the sale of its 50% interest in the property as an “historic achievement” stating that the transaction will “continue to pay dividends for generations to come.”

The Board of Supervisors is pleased to facilitate single-entity ownership of this property uniquely centered in a corridor of East Oakland that has amazing potential.

“The County is committed to bringing its negotiations with OAC to a close,” said Board President David Haubert.
