Richmond native Déja Bryson will appear at Yoshi’s in Oakland on Sept. 8at 7 p.m. at a benefit for the “Lend a Hand Foundation” and “Ladies in Red,” which work to empower and uplift youth and women in the community.

“I’ve been singing since I was four,” Bryson said. “The whole point of the show is to bring back the love of music.”

R&B and Soul mixed with a touch of Hip Hop can be heard in Bryson’s music but it is all inspired by love. Her love goes beyond relationships and friendships, but dive into being connected to self, art and community.

In an original ballad “Just a Woman”, she sings about women becoming extremely tough and the need for women to also bask in their feminine side.

“I get high from singing, and I’m very passionate about my art form,” Bryson added.

Along with her original works, she says she will also perform classics by Aretha Franklin, the Isley Brothers and others.

Keeping with a theme of love for the show, Richmond artist Dejuan Love will be the opening act. She says his soulful voice is remnant of the late and great Luther Vandross.

“There is no hype about the artists,” Bryson said. “The whole production is filled with people are passionate about the art and influencing love.”
