Last Minute Signups for Covered California

This past Sunday was the deadline to apply for health plans for Covered California for 2015, and Congresswoman Barbara Lee and Oakland Mayor Schaaf participated in a final push for maximum enrollment at Lake Chalet in Oakland.

African American Affordable Care Act hosted the event, which was coordinated by Lagarant Communications.

Families relaxed on the lawns around Lake Chalet while inside Certified Insurance Agents and other qualified representatives for Covered California assisted the new enrollees.

People started lining up for the event at 10:30 a.m., according to Terri Dixon, Lagrant Communications account supervisor.

The event staff and insurance agents started processing the “early birds,” rather than waiting for the scheduled 1 p.m. start time.

People came from all over the Bay Area. One man, Leon Washington, drove from Gilroy.

Archie D. Stroman was surprised that the process was so easy.

While open enrollment began Nov. 15 and ended Feb. 15, a special-enrollment option is available for those who experience a life-changing event (such as getting married, having a child or moving) and need to enroll outside of open enrollment. Medi-Cal enrollment for those with qualifying incomes is available year-round.
