Habesha Women’s Health Expo Comes to the Bay Area
The Habesha (Eritrean and Ethiopian) Women’s Health Expo (HWHE) will host a health expo on February 8th to raise awareness in the Habesha community about healthy living.
A fundraising cocktail event will be held Thursday, Oct. 17, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Liege Lounge, 481 9th St in Oakland. A $10 donation is requested. The annual Bay Area Habesha Women’s Health Expo is scheduled for Jan. 25.
“We’ve found that many Habesha women in the community may not know what resources are available to them in terms of having a nutritional diet or know where to get vaccination. So we want to streamline the process and connect these women,” said Almaz Nigusse, a HWHE committee member.
“We are a small group of dedicated young and educated Eritrean/Ethiopian women who have noticed the lack of support that Habesha women experience while residing in the Bay Area.”
By the end of 2014, Niguisse says the organization hopes to reach over 200 Habesha women who will have gained increased knowledge of women’s health and mental health resources in the Bay Area.
The goal is to reach Eritrean/Ethiopian women ages 18 and above to create women’s health awareness on breast and cervical cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, as well as mental health awareness.
