Governor Brown Endorses Libby Schaaf for Mayor of Oakland
As the race for mayor of Oakland comes down to the wire, Governor Jerry Brown this week announced he is endorsing Councilmember Libby Schaaf. Brown, former mayor of Oakland, said that Schaaf is the most “practical” candidate in the race and could help Oakland reach its potential.
“Making Oakland work is not about ideology but about rolling up your sleeves and getting things done,” he said. “I’m confident that, given a chance and cooperation and support from the community, Oakland can take the next step forward. It’s all different, it’s all diverse, and it’s all good. To keep it going and to make it even better, I know Libby Schaaf will be a great mayor,” Brown said at the Monday press conference at Schaaf’s campaign office.
The governor’s endorsement could give Schaaf a boost she needs after a recent poll showed her running behind Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan and Mayor Jean Quan. Schaaf is one of 15 candidates running for mayor.
“I am so excited to bring back to Oakland government that Jerry Brown, roll-up-your-sleeves, get-some-stuff-done energy for Oakland,” Schaaf said. “I am excited about doing better for this city because I think we all know Oakland can do better.”
