Veteran firefighter Darin White has been named Oakland’s new fire chief.

An Oakland native with 30 years in the fire service, 20 of which were dedicated to the Oakland Fire Department, Chief White brings extensive operational and executive leadership expertise, coupled with a responsive and collaborative approach to achieve community-oriented safety outcomes.

“We conducted a rigorous national search to find the best fire chief for Oakland,” said Mayor Libby Schaaf.

“We sought a fire chief who will be a decisive and highly visible leader with a proven reputation for being accessible, honest, and transparent, a leader who knows our community and will provide exceptional service, and whose inspiring demeanor will continue to move the Oakland Fire Department forward,” she said.

Chief White has been serving as acting and then interim fire chief since January this year. Prior to this assignment, he served for two years as deputy chief of field operations, where he performed as Incident Commander or Operations Chief at significant and complex incidents and ensured organizational response preparedness by managing training exercises for mass casualty incidents and other catastrophic events.

He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire and Emergency Services Administration from Colorado State University. He attended the Executive Development Institute at Dillard University and served as President of the Alameda County Fire Chiefs Association Operations Section.
