Crime Prevention Tips for the Holiday Shopping Season

While Vallejo is a wonderful community to call home, crime can happen anywhere and at any time. As Vallejo enters the holiday season, the Vallejo Police Department encourages and reminds shoppers to use caution and mindfulness throughout the holiday season. Through the Hide It. Lock it. Take it. campaign, VPD reminds shoppers to lock cars, put belongings out of sight, or simply take valuable items with you. In addition to these simple steps, keep in mind the following tips to reduce the chances of becoming a victim of theft:
While using a shopping cart, do not leave your purse unattended while selecting items, or leave it open exposing the contents of your purse and/or wallet.
Use all of your senses to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Pay close attention to suspicious activities and persons. Carry yourself with confidence and alertness.
Avoid using headphones, cell phones, iPods and tablets, which limit your ability to be aware of what is going on around you.
Try to travel with someone, or travel when there are other people around. Walk in well-lit areas and avoid dark alleys, shortcuts and deserted areas. Park your vehicle in a well-lit area with plenty of walking traffic.
If you are a victim, try to stay calm and call 9-1-1 as soon as practical via a landline or cell phone, or (707) 552-3285 for non-emergencies
