Lynette Gibson McElhaney plans to install a commemorative plaque in the Black Arts Movement Business District to honor Chauncey Bailey, the former Chief Editor of the Oakland Post who was gunned down in downtown Oakland August 2, 2007.

McElhaney said she was familiar with Bailey’s work through her church and various nonprofit organizations.

“News of his slaying shook all of us to our core. He wrote to us, about us, and kept us focused on the things that mattered most. Post Publisher Paul Cobb has maintained a steadfast focus on having the commemorative plaque installed on 14th Street, in the corridor where Bailey was slain. The loss of Chauncey was a loss for the entire African American Community. I look forward to the chance to honor his memory and example where he died in service to our community”, said McElhaney.

She plans to install the plaque on Bailey’s birth date in October. For information, contact McElhaney at (510) 238- 7003.
