MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (The StarTribune) —  Nekima Levy-Pounds, a college law professor who has been the voice and the face of the fledgling Black Lives Matter movement in the Twin Cities, is the newly elected president of the NAACP’s Minneapolis chapter.

Levy-Pounds, who teaches at the University of St. Thomas, was elected to the post Saturday evening at Northpoint Health and Wellness in north Minneapolis and noted on her website that the chapter also elected an all-female cabinet, a result “which apparently has never happened before.”

Born in Jackson, Miss., Levy-Pounds was named “Attorney of the Year” by Minnesota Lawyer in 2014 and entered the public consciousness last fall when she became a leading advocate of Black Lives Matter Minneapolis, which has, like its counterparts around the country, gained footing in the wake of high-profile police shootings of unarmed black men.
