As a little boy, after many awkward collisions with grownups while walking on the sidewalk, I was taught to walk to the right in order to avoid these mishaps. When I got old enough to drive the rational for this early instruction was validated by the orderly flow of traffic (in America) on the right side of the road. I found that accidents usually occurred when one or more vehicles violated this right side of the road principle. Even in countries such as England and Australia, although they drive on the left side of the road, they still seem to walk on the right side of the road. This general “rules of the road” is fairly universal throughout the world—but, not everywhere.

 

I find that Asian countries like Taiwan, China, and Vietnam approach their traffic rules a bit more —let us say
