Rev. Leora Overall, 97, Leaves a Legacy of Evangelism, Teaching and Leadership




Rev. Leora Mae Bland Overall was born on Oct. 5, 1921 to Early and Ora Bland.

She accepted Jesus into her life at the age of 13, attending Peter Chapel AME Church in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where she faithfully attended Sunday school and sang in the choir.

She married Roy Romeo Overall in 1941. The couple had six children, Angelina Overall Archie, Roy Rodger Overall, Shirley Louise Overall Davis, Joel Overall (with Jesus), Matthew Timothy Overall and Michael Overall.

The Overall family moved to Bakersfield, California, and in1942, they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where Roy worked on the Hoover Dam. The family relocated to West Oakland in 1943, where Leora became a member of the Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

While her husband was fighting in World War II in France, Leora was busy raising two small children and evangelizing souls within her circle of influence, including her neighbors who all loved her.

She worked in the Sunday school department, the Baptist Training Union, the Missions department and became the District Co-Coordinator of the Baptist Training Union.

She traveled from San Francisco to Bakersfield, giving seminars to 135 churches. She also served as president of the PTA at her children’s school.

Her husband passed in January 1971.

In 1963, she graduated from the Mt. Zion Baptist Bible School, the Bay Cities Bible Institute in 1967, from Laney College (AA), Shiloh Bible College (Bachelor of Theology and Masters of Historical Theology). She received a lifetime elementary teaching credential from Holy Names College in 1976, and an Honorary Doctor of Theology degree from Shiloh Bible College in 2011.

In 1967, she became a member of a small church called Shiloh Temple, now called Shiloh Church.

At Shiloh, she began to operate fully in her spiritual gifts of evangelism, teaching, leadership and prophecy. She also participated in door-to-door evangelism, Vacation Bible School, taught in the Children’s Sunday school, and she was a Shiloh Bible College teacher for 44 years.

Leora Overall was also director of the Rest Home ministry and a Chaplain at Highland Hospital.  She ministered at jails, hospitals, and visited the sick at home. She was the Oil of Joy Pastor for many years and also taught reading at Shiloh Christian Academy.

She has ministered in China, Ethiopia, Israel, Japan, Jamaica, Alaska, Canada, and all over America.

Leora Overall leaves a tribe of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews to live out her legacy.

Her grandchildren are: James Reginald Archie Jr. (Kim), Tracy Hester, Lori Knight (Kermit) Freddie Overall (Patricia), Jenene Dotson (Wendell), Jacqueline Lee, Duane Lee (Regina), Nakhoal Williams (Roderick), Tirralan Watkins (Lawrence), Tamara Coleman (Kevin), Ayanna Overall, Jonathan Overall (Jessica), Rachell Overall, Tamarra Navarro, Matthew Overall (Ina), Jarud Overall, Joseph Overall, Corey Cato, Sharrie Overall, Michael Overall Jr. (Lorena), Michaela Overall.

Great-Grandchildren: Courtney Miller (Patrick), Christopher Hester Jr., Chloe Archie, James Archie III,  Candance Overall, Josten Overall, Jeralyn Dayon, Joseph Dayon, Rejoice Dotson, Miles Lee, Christian Lee, Adam Lee, Jourdan Williams, Jayda Williams, Charlton Watkins, Chandler Watkins, Micah Coleman, Christian Coleman, Daniel Subia, Julian Navarro, Kiely Navarro, Matthew Overall III,  Sophia Overall, Kalani Overall, Skyler Overall, Amani Washington, Roy Washington, Chloe Curl, Maiyah Overall.
