Paul C. Ajegba, a distinguished alumni of the University of Michigan College of Engineering (CEE), has been honored with the prestigious 2023 Alumni Merit Award. This esteemed recognition is bestowed upon CEE graduates who exemplify the motto “leaders and best” and have made exceptional contributions to their communities, enriching lives through their dedicated efforts. The award acknowledges their remarkable accomplishments and influential projects undertaken following graduation.
Ajegba’s illustrious career spans over three decades, culminating in his role as the Director of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Prior to assuming this significant position, he held key roles as the Metro Region Engineer and the University Region Engineer. During his seven-year tenure as the University Region Engineer, Ajegba oversaw his team’s involvement in planning, designing, and constructing several notable projects, including the highly acclaimed US-23 Flex Route. This project was acknowledged with a nomination for America’s Transportation Award and secured a place among the top twelve national finalists.
In addition to his remarkable professional achievements, Ajegba is highly revered for his individual contributions to important initiatives such as the I-94 rehabilitation project in the Ann Arbor/Jackson area, the I-96/US-23 interchange, and the significant I-75 freeway project. His unwavering dedication to these endeavors has continuously propelled improvements in Michigan’s transportation system.
Ajegba earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Prairie View A&M University and further bolstered his educational portfolio with a master’s degree in Construction Engineering from the University of Michigan. His exceptional expertise in the field has led to his licensure as a professional engineer in the State of Michigan.
Beyond his outstanding professional journey, Ajegba remains an active member of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) and has served on various boards, including AASHTO, ITS America, M-City, the University of Michigan, College of Engineering, the Engineering Society of Detroit, and the Mackinac Bridge Authority.
Due to his unwavering commitment to excellence and innovative advancements in transportation engineering, Paul C. Ajegba has rightfully been honored with the 2023 Alumni Merit Award.
