Nordstrom Closing Both San Francisco Stores, Citing ‘Dynamics of Downtown’

Nordstrom, a fixture in downtown San Francisco for 35 years, said it will close its department store in Westfield mall on Market Street and its nearby discount outlet within three months, citing changing “dynamics of the downtown.” The announcement came Tuesday in an all-company message from Jamie Nordstrom, the company’s chief stores officer. He called it a “difficult decision not to renew our leases.”

Nordstrom, a fixture in downtown San Francisco for 35 years, said it will close its department store in Westfield mall on Market Street and its nearby discount outlet within three months, citing changing “dynamics of the downtown.”

The announcement came Tuesday in an all-company message from Jamie Nordstrom, the company’s chief stores officer. He called it a “difficult decision not to renew our leases.”

“As many of you know, the dynamics of the downtown San Francisco market have changed dramatically over the past several years, impacting customer foot traffic to our stores and our ability to operate successfully,” Jamie Nordstrom said.

Nordstrom Rack on Market Street, the Seattle-based retailer’s discount store, will have its last day of business July 1. The company intends to close its Nordstrom location at Westfield San Francisco Centre at the end of August.

Nordstrom has been an anchor of Westfield mall since 1988. Nordstrom Rack has been on Market Street since 2014.

“Our Bay Area business is healthy, and we have made significant investments in our stores there over the past several years,” a Nordstrom spokesman said.

The company will continue to serve customers of Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack at 16 suburban Bay Area locations, the spokesman said.

The company recently announced a new Nordstrom Rack store in Pinole and remodeled its Valley Fair Nordstrom store in San Jose.

On the same day that the closings were disclosed, Nordstrom announced five new Rack store openings in Davis, Elk Grove, Gilroy, Oceanside and San Mateo.
