Jerry Amos Smith, 65
Jerry Amos Smith, a resident of Marin, passed away on Oct. 5, 2019.
Smith’s memorial service was held on Nov. 16, 2019, at the Peoples Inter-Cities Fellowship in Marin City. Pastor Marcus Small officiated the service.
Smith was born on Jan. 4, 1954, in New Orleans, La., to Dorothy Lee Smith.
When Smith was eight years old in 1962, he and his family moved and lived with their uncle Amos and aunt Irma Wade in Marin City for six months. The Smith family then moved to San Rafael, becoming one of the first Black families to live there.
Smith attended Terra Linda High School, where he played sports and graduated with honors. He then studied music and business management at the College of Marin. He drove trucks for 30 years.
Smith never married, or had children, but was a loving and compassionate man with a huge heart. He will be greatly missed.
“Farewell to my younger brother, who I walked to school in New Orleans,” his sister Ann Smith wrote. “Thank you, Jerry, for the times you escorted me to concerts and plays in California. Those memories of shared times will be with me forever. Sending you on with love.”
Smith is survived by brothers; Fred Smith of San Rafael, and Wayne Smith of Sacramento; Carmen Gardenhire of San Rafael, Meriam Burks of Arizona, Ann Smith of Novato, Dorothy Jefferies of Sacramento and Gina Naghise of San Rafael. He was preced in death by sister Iris McCray.
