Howard University Greek Club Celebrates Legacy in Sacramento Gathering




The Northern California Zeta Sigma Council hosted their inaugural Founder’s Day celebration at the Doubletree Hilton in Sacramento on Jan. 19.

Members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated and Phi Beta Sigma fraternity Incorporated came together to celebrate their founders and legacy of service. Phi Beta Sigma National President, Michael E. Cristal provided the keynote address. “I’m blessed to lead a brotherhood of conscious men that is constitutionally bound with a strong sisterhood in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,” he said.

Collegiate Achievement awards were presented to Markell Johnson of Lamda Kappa Chapter, UC Davis, and Desiree Powell of Nu Mu Chapter, San Francisco State University. Brandon Riley of Alpha Nu Sigma Chapter of Oakland and Fenicia Jacks of Delta Delta Zeta Chapter, San Francisco, received the graduate service awards.

New member Kenneth Cooper of Theta Gamma Sigma Chapter of Sacramento received special recognition. Kedric Nalls of Gamma Sigma Sigma Chapter in Stockton held the live auction of gift baskets and paraphernalia.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in Wash., D.C., Jan. 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The founders, Hon. A. Langston Taylor, Hon. Leonard F. Morse and Hon. Charles I. Brown wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.

The international, historically Black Greek-lettered sorority Zeta Phi Beta was founded at Howard University in Wash., D.C., Jan. 16, 1920, by Arizona Cleaver, Pearl Anna Neal, Viola Tyler , Fannie Pettie and Myrtle Tyler who envisioned a sorority that would raise the consciousness of their people, encourage the highest standards of scholastic achievement, and foster a greater sense of unity among its members.
