The Oakland Post Community Assembly, along with parents and teachers at impacted schools, will host a community discussion about the school district plan to close dozens of schools over the next few years under the guidance of a non-elected state-funded agency, the Fiscal Crisis Management and Assistance Team (FCMAT), Sunday, Nov. 3, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Geoffrey’s. Inner Circle, 410 14th St. in downtown Oakland.

OUSD has already closed 15 schools since the state took over in 2003. This  past school year, the district closed Roots Elementary. Now they plan to close up to 24 more schools, all serving flatlands students.

What role does FCMAT play in closing Oakland schools? How does FCMAT dominate school decision-making without public accountability?

Is there any evidence that closing schools save money, helps students in any way or leads to district financial stability and improved resources for students?
