Rep. Barbara Lee to Host Summit on Childhood Poverty with Bay Area Anti-Poverty Advocates

On Monday, August 26th, Congresswoman Barbara Lee will host a summit in Oakland with Bay Area anti-poverty advocates on efforts to address childhood poverty at the federal, state, and local levels.

The summit will feature a presentation from researchers at the National Academy of Sciences on their recent landmark report, A Roadmap to Reducing Child Poverty.

The report examines the developmental impacts and societal costs of childhood poverty and makes recommendations for how to cut the nation’s child poverty rate in half in 10 years.

Congresswoman Lee helped commission the study, along with California Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard.

Speakers will include Congresswoman Lee, who will present on congressional efforts to address childhood poverty and her work with the Majority Leader’s Task Force on Poverty and Op­portunity; Ann O’Leary, chief of staff to Gov. Gavin Newsom, who will discuss spending on programs targeting child poverty in the governor’s budget; and Jackie Wong, vice president of policy and advocacy at GRACE, the anchor organization for the End Child Poverty in California Campaign.

Hilary Hoynes, a member of the board on children, youth, and families at the National Academy of Sciences and the State of California Task Force on Lifting Children and Families out of Poverty will be present as well as Christine James-Brown, mem­ber of the board on children, youth, and families and Nell My­hand, organizer at the California Poor People’s Campaign
