Two late home runs, lift A’s for the win

Oakland, CA – No better way than to start the series with a win. After losing two straight and eight of the last ten games, the Oakland Athletics bounce back for the 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Two late home runs life the A’s over the Royals. Despite outstanding pitching from ace James Shields Oakland overcame his command on the mound as well as the bullpen. Shields had retired 11 straight before Josh Donaldson led off the seventh with his sixth home run and tied the game 1-1.

“It was just a case of me not doing my job, bottom line” said James. “I don’t really care what the score of the game is, I just didn’t get the job done at the end. It’s a tough loss right there, a real tough loss.”

In his last three starts, Shields has given up only five runs and the Royals have scored just four runs in those games. As a result, Kansas City lost all three times with James getting a no-decision and two loses.

“We didn’t have any chances,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “David Lough picked up one RBI and we couldn’t get anything going all night long.”

Lough got the only hit the team could muster. In the third, he followed Salvador Perez’s double off Jarrod Parker. David hit a single right over shortstop Adam Rosales into left field to score in Perez.

The A’s starter Parker threw his best game all season, allowing one run on four hits over a season-high seven innings. He walked two and struck out five. It was a battle on the mound and the best prevailed behind two explosive at-bats from Oakland’s offense. Jarrod retired seven of the first eight batters he faced.

“It’s a step in the right direction,” said Parker. “The last couple of starts I tried to piece things together. This time I tried to power through the ball and was getting ground balls.”

“Getting him on track would be huge,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “He seemed like he had a clam to him. Right away he was throwing strikes. Hopefully this is a springboard for him. He was really good.”

Rosales was also really good, he led off the eighth frame with a solo blast, his second of the year. That was the nail if the coffin after great pitching from both sides. Adam gave credit to Jarrod’s pitching as the reason why Oakland was able to come back for the win.

“I haven’t gotten too many starts against a right-handers,” said Rosales. “I appreciate the opportunity. The crowd really pumped me up and I just ran.”

“That was such a huge pickup for us,” Parker said of Adam’s home run. “It was a big hit for us. Even J.D.’s hit was huge.”

Oakland Housing and Community Development Department Awards $80.5 Million to Affordable Housing Developments

The City of Oakland’s Housing and Community Development Department (Oakland HCD) announced its awardees for the 2024-2025 New Construction of Multifamily Affordable Housing Notice of Funding Availability (New Construction NOFA) today Five permanently affordable housing developments received awards out of 24 applications received by the Department, with award amounts ranging from $7 million to $28 million.

In a statement released on Jan. 16, Oakland’s HCD stated, “Five New Construction Multifamily Affordable Housing Development projects awarded a total of $80.5 million to develop 583 affordable rental homes throughout Oakland. Awardees will leverage the City’s investments to apply for funding from the state and private entities.”

In December, the office of Rebecca Kaplan, interim District 2 City Councilmember, worked with HCD to allocate an additional $10 Million from Measure U to the funding pool. The legislation also readopted various capital improvement projects including street paving and upgrades to public facilities.

The following Oakland affordable housing developments have been awarded in the current round:

Mandela Station Affordable

238 Affordable Units including 60 dedicated for Homeless/Special Needs
Award: $15 million + previously awarded $18 million

The County of Alameda announced this week that a deal allowing the Oakland Acquisition Company, LLC, (“OAC”) to acquire the County’s 50% undivided interest in the Oakland- Alameda County Coliseum complex is in the final stages of completion.

Oakland has already finalized a purchase and sale agreement with OAC for its interest in the property. OAC’s acquisition of the County’s property interest will achieve two longstanding goals of the County:

The Oakland-Alameda Coliseum complex will finally be under the control of a sole owner with capacity to make unilateral decisions regarding the property; and
The County will be out of the sports and entertainment business, free to focus and rededicate resources to its core safety net

In an October 2024 press release from the City of Oakland, the former Oakland mayor described the sale of its 50% interest in the property as an “historic achievement” stating that the transaction will “continue to pay dividends for generations to come.”

The Board of Supervisors is pleased to facilitate single-entity ownership of this property uniquely centered in a corridor of East Oakland that has amazing potential.

“The County is committed to bringing its negotiations with OAC to a close,” said Board President David Haubert.
