Last year during the Thanksgiving holiday, 2 Star Market, located at 2020 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland, fed nearly 700 Bay Area residents during their 17th Annual Thanksgiving Community Celebration.

This year’s 18th annual Thanksgiving meal will be vastly different because the coronavirus pandemic has prevented large groups of people from gathering. SmOakRing Smokehouse, a barbeque eatery located inside 2 Star Market, will be providing free meals, along with 2 Star’s usual Thanksgiving fixings, which will be ready and available for pickup only for anyone.

The community celebration will take place at 2 Star Market’s parking lot on Thursday, November 26, between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. All attendees will be required to wear a mask as well as practice social distancing. Masks will be provided if needed. Meals will be pre-packaged for families of two or four members. There will be no seating available for guests.

SmOakRing specializes in drop-off office lunch and caterings of barbeque meals, and also serves take-out at 2 Star to walk-in customers. Their meals include ‘smoaked’ pork, salmon and BBQ chicken wings. In addition to the meats, SmOakRing provides BBQ-beans and ‘smoaked’ vegetables with take-out meals.

The husband-and-wife team of Carlos and LaTisha Hernandez who own SmOakRing Smokehouse wanted to do something special and help feed the hungry and less fortunate residents throughout the Fruitvale and Dimond districts. “As the holidays near, we are happy to be a part of the 2 Star Market annual holiday meal giveaway,” said Carlos.

“SmOakRing specializes in slow and low mesquite-smoked meats, brisket, glazed ribs and homemade sausage links that we take time, up to 14 hours, to cook. We carefully prepare and take our time when cooking and serving our meals because we want our customers to come back for more.”

“Our food is all about love for family, which includes my mom “Linda’s special potato salad,” and a (recipe for ribs) created by my late brother who passed in 2018,” added Carlos. “While growing up on 38th and Allendale, my family had to struggle, and people from this community helped us. This why it’s my responsibility to give back to the community and I feel blessed to be in a position to help others.”

“This Thanksgiving, SmOakRing will be donating whole smoked briskets to people, as well as macaroni and cheese. And our Cheesecake Dreams, from my sister’s line of homemade desserts, will also be donated. We are delighted that 2 Star Market has welcomed us with open arms and made us one family.”

Farouq Alawdi, manager of 2 Star Market, said he is excited to have SmOakRing help feed Oakland residents. “SmOakRing’s involvement in joining us this year is a tremendous support for our on-going annual celebration,” said Alawdi.

“It is part of our fabric and dedication to the community who, without them, we wouldn’t be here. It’s our way of thanking the community for their support and for patronizing us. We look forward to doing this every year and the meals we provide on Thanksgiving are free so the only thing residents need to bring is an appetite.”

Special to The Post

At Tuesday night’s Council meeting, the Vallejo City Council appointed Beverli Marshall as the interim city manager. Her tenure in the City Manager’s Office began today, Wednesday, April 10.

Mayor Robert McConnell praised Marshall’s extensive background, noting her “wide breadth of experience in many areas that will assist the City and its citizens in understanding the complexity of the many issues that must be solved” in Vallejo.

Current City Manager Michael Malone, whose official departure is slated for April 18, expressed his well wishes. “I wish the City of Vallejo and Interim City Manager Marshall all the best in moving forward on the progress we’ve made to improve service to residents.” Malone expressed his hope that the staff and Council will work closely with ICM Marshall to “ensure success and prosperity for the City.”

According to the Vallejo Sun, Malone stepped into the role of interim city manager in 2021 and became permanent in 2022. Previously, Malone served as the city’s water director and decided to retire from city service e at the end of his contract which is April 18.

“I hope the excellent work of City staff will continue for years to come in Vallejo,” he said. “However, recent developments have led me to this decision to announce my retirement.”

When Malone was appointed, Vallejo was awash in scandals involving the housing division and the police department. A third of the city’s jobs went unfilled during most of his tenure, making for a rocky road for getting things done, the Vallejo Sun reported.

At last night’s council meeting, McConnell explained the selection process, highlighting the council’s confidence in achieving positive outcomes through a collaborative effort, and said this afternoon, “The Council is confident that by working closely together, positive results will be obtained.”

While the search for a permanent city manager is ongoing, an announcement is expected in the coming months.

On behalf of the City Council, Mayor McConnell extended gratitude to the staff, citizen groups, and recruitment firm.

“The Council wishes to thank the staff, the citizens’ group, and the recruitment firm for their diligent work and careful consideration for the selection of what is possibly the most important decision a Council can make on behalf of the betterment of our City,” McConnell said.

The Vallejo Sun contributed to this report.
