The trustees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill voted 9-4 on Wednesday, June 30 to offer tenure to Nikole Hannah-Jones.
In April it was announced that the Pulitizer Prize winner of the New York Times Magazine 1619 Project would join as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism with only a five-year contract.
No explanation was given about why tenure was not being offered. Attorneys for Hannah-Jones announced that she would not report to work without tenure.
Student Body President Lamar Richards, a trustee, called for the special meeting in a closed-door session.
Hannah-Jones begins work on July 1, 2021.
