Joseph Debro, died of cancer at David Grant Hospital at Travis Air Force Base, Monday, Nov. 4. He was 84 years old.
Debro was a McClymonds graduate who served in Governor Jerry Brown’s Cabinet as Small Business Director and he and the late Ray Dones helped organize the National Association of Minority Contractors He was a chemistry instructor. Debro hailed from Mississippi. He and Congressman Bennie Thompson helped build thousands of units of rural housing throughout the nation.

As a contractor, he built and rehabilitated numerous structures, including the Malonga Casquelord Arts Center in Oakland. He was an activist who also mentored many minority businesses, including the Oakland Post where he was a columist. He was a member of Parks Chapel AME Church, 476-34th Street. His wife Anita, said his funeral will be held Monday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m.
