Marcus Books – Thriving And Going Strong
Marcus Books is the oldest Black bookstore in the nation, offering “Book by and about Black people everywhere,” since 1960.
Their first store was in San Francisco, and they opened a second store in Oakland in 1982. Over the years, the stores have shaped and changed the lives of countless individuals.
While the San Francisco store is closed for relocation, the Oakland store at 3900 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way, still provides the community with a vast and unique selection of literature, including an especially large section for children. The store continues to host local and national authors for book signings, a Marcus tradition that has included thousands of authors and scholars from Toni Morrison to Muhammad Ali.
Recently Marcus Books welcomed new author Clifford Li. Williams, and has made his first book, “Pimps to Pops – A Journey to Fatherhood,” available for purchase from the store. The book explores how a conference on parenthood transformed boys to men.
Williams will be conducting a discussion and book signing at Oakland’s African American Museum and Library, 659, 14th Street on Saturday, August 24th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
