Lack of Transparency in School Redesign Process, Says McClymonds Community




One of the five schools that Oakland Unified School District plans to totally transform is McClymonds High School in West Oakland, where many in the school community are saying they are still confused about what the district’s guidelines mean and how they will be implemented.

According to the district policy, school organizations and charter schools can submit proposals, which will then be evaluated by a committee of district administrators and the superintendent.

Each school is encouraged to develop one or more site-based committees of 10-15 members to improve the school. Each of the groups recruits committee members and schedules its own meetings.

<p>According to the district, there are two timelines schools can choose. One is the fast track, which would go into effect in August.

The other would not go into effect until April 2016 and implemented in the 2016-17 school year.

People at McClymonds are still unclear on who will have the final say on the timeline, says Artanesha Jackson, an alumna of McClymonds and social worker at the school. She says the lack of transparency surrounding the process is very concerning.

“Everybody is confused,” she said. “I feel like the (district) knows more than they’re telling us.”

McClymonds students spoke with The Post about the changes they want to see, including more college trips, additional extracurricular activities, better lunches, and consistent support from faculty.

If you start something, you need to finish it, said one student who is a senior at the high school, referring to the multiple transformations that McClymonds has gone through in the past.

The student also emphasized the need for “pure motives” from district staff.

“Walk the walk and talk the talk,” the student said.

Speaking about school safety, another student, also a senior, said there is no need for armed police on campus.

“We don’t need that much force here. We’re good kids,” she said.
