Food is Free Solano, is a local resource, which provides free food resources for the less fortunate families and the homeless during the COVID-19 crisis. Heather Pierini, the founder and director of this organization began with just a fruit and vegetable stand with fresh fruit that she grew herself.
When she realized so many people were coming to the stand for the fresh fruits and vegetables she decided to enlist her neighbors to help and together they created 13 stands. Some donated canned goods and volunteered to also help pick fruit from the trees.
With the COVID-19 relief programs ending soon, Food is Free Solano has paired up with other organizations and food sources to do two more food drives. On Tuesday, they conducted a holiday drive passing out about 2,400 food boxes including books for the children.
The ultimate goal is to continue providing free access to healthy food for the community and evolving to meet its needs. To find more information on upcoming food drives and programs visit their event calendar www.foodisfreesolano.org where you can find local produce stands in Solano County.
