Carl Robert Hampton, affectionately known as “Cowboy” to family and close friends, was born on February 7, 1942, in Gulfport, Miss., to the parents of Louis Sr. and Lillie Hampton. He was the fifth of nine children.

After moving to California, he accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at North Richmond Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond, Calif., under the leadership of the late Pastor F. W. Watkins.

Hampton attended the Richmond public schools in the 1950s.  Hampton was a skillful craftsman; he had the ability to build anything with his hands.  He genuinely enjoyed throwing parties, sometimes with live entertainment, at his residence, which he called “Cowboys Place.”

Hampton worked over 50 years as a shoe cobbler, starting out under his father, the late Louis Hampton Sr. before taking over the family business, Hampton Shoe Repair in North Richmond, CA where he worked until his retirement.

Hampton exemplified a truly humble spirit.  Even though he would speak his mind, he put others before himself and enjoyed making them laugh.  He treated everyone as his equal and never felt the need to boast.  He was a phenomenal man and had a beautiful life.  He was a brother, uncle, and great friend to many and he will be missed.

Carl Robert Hampton departed this life on Monday, June 1, 2020, in San Pablo, CA.  Preceding him in death were his parents Louis Sr. and Lillie Hampton; brothers Louis Hampton Jr., Joe Hampton, Bill Hampton and Horace Hampton; and sisters Laetitia Wilson and Lillie Hampton.

Carl is survived by his brothers, Donald Hampton of Hercules, CA., and Charles Hampton of Richmond, CA; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hampton of Texas, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
