Akilah Johnson, 15 Wins National Google Art Contest
Akilah Johnson is the first African American to have her art work chosen for Google.
She has earned $30,000 towards college and $50,000 for her school.
And, she’s only 15 years old.
Johnson, who lives in Washington, D.C., was selected from 100,000 submissions as the winner of Google’s “Doodle 4 Google” national competition.
When asked what inspired her piece, “My Afrocentric Life”, which includes names like Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X and more, Johnson said:
“One of my teachers from Roots, Baba Camera, is really what made me look at art in a different way. As I grew older, I had realized that the Black people that came before us have made us into what we are today. So of course, I had to include them in some way.”
