Council Pays Tribute to Victor McElhaney
The Oakland City Council this week held a special tribute to Victor McElhaney – the son of Councilmember Lynette Gibson McElhaney – who was slain recently in Los Angeles where he was attending the University of Southern California.
“We want to send our love and blessings to Councilmember Lynette Gibson McElhaney,” said Council President Rebecca Kaplan.
The tribute was put together by Kev Choice, well known local musician, composer, educator and activist.

“Victor McElhaney was a son of Oakland, a product of our village, a beacon of light as a musician, a young brother with a conscience to take his music and make a change in the world,” said Choice. “I taught him in the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music. He was a student at the Oakland School of the Arts.”
Choice introduced the Oakland School for the Arts Combo, who played a song for Victor.
Performing were Jayla Hernández-drums, Edgar Duchesneau-bass, Josephine Trilling-guitar and Max Nguyen-saxophone.
As part of the tribute, Oakland poet Paradise also read one of his poems.
