Conway Jones to Head County Veteran Affairs Commission

Retired Air Force Colonel Conway Jones has been elected chairman of the Alameda County Veterans Affairs Commission.

Jones will serve a one-year term, starting Jan. 1.He was appointed to the commission by Supervisor Keith Carson.

“Colonel Jones is a strong advocate for our county’s veterans. I am proud that his colleagues recognized his leadership abilities and put him at the helm,” said Supervisor Carson.

The commission advises the Board of Supervisors on matters relating to veterans and their families, including their basic needs for veterans’ benefits, housing, food, shelter and employment.

The Veterans Commission is working with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to build a $209 million VA Outpatient Clinic and Columbarium at Alameda Point. The land transfer of more than 500 acres is scheduled to take place in 2014.

Jones previously served as a member of the Alameda County Arts Commission.
