Mrs. Vivian Spenser-Odom was born Sept. 8, 1920, in Brenham, Texas. She is  the 11th of 14 children born to William Landis Spenser and Mrs. Viola Kirk-Spenser.

Vivian Spenser joined union with Mr. James Lewis in 1942 and migrated to Oakland, California in 1944, where she has lived for 77 years.

Mrs. Odom was an elementary school teacher for 35 years and began working for Alameda County Social Services for another 20 years, retiring at age 92.

Mrs. Odom has one daughter, Ms. Raynetta Lewis; three grandchildren Norvell, Special, and Gerell and three great-grandchildren, Zyair, Sir Amir, and McKenzie.

Upon migrating to Oakland, CA, Mrs. Odom joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Robert T. George, and served as an usher until George passed away.

Mrs. Odom enjoys shopping, dancing and cooking for her great-grandchildren. Mrs. Odom says she is going to “dance right into heaven.” Her favorite saying is “don’t’ smoke, don’t drink, and always talk to the good Lord.

We wish Mrs. Odom a very happy 101st birthday!
