Two Communities Join Forces for Black History and Lunar New Year
In partnership with the Malonga Arts Residents Association (MARA), Eastwind Books of Berkeley, Marcus Books, and the Alameda County National Council of Negro Women, the event will include an incredible lineup of musicians, dance groups and Black and Asian martial artists.

Furthering a Black-Asian Alliance in Oakland, the Oakland Asian Cultural Center is holding its third annual Lunar New Year x Black History Month Community Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center at 388 Ninth St. in Suite 290.
In partnership with the Malonga Arts Residents Association (MARA), Eastwind Books of Berkeley, Marcus Books, and the Alameda County National Council of Negro Women, the event will include an incredible lineup of musicians, dance groups and Black and Asian martial artists.
Miko Lee, director of programs for Asian Americans for Civil Rights and Equality, will emcee the daylong program.
Lion dancers from UC Berkeley and the Toisan Benevolent Association anchor the day, which also features performers such as Dimensions Dance Theater, the Destiny Arts Center, the Great Wall Youth Orchestra, Voices of a Dream, Dance-A-Vision, and others.
In addition to a full day of performances, there will be an exhibition on Black and Asian solidarity, a local vendor’s marketplace and midday storytelling with guests from Eastwind Books of Berkeley and the historic Marcus Books of Oakland
This event is part of OACC’s ongoing Open E.A.R.S. for Change initiative, which started in 2020 to build stronger relationships among local Asian, Pacific Islander and Black communities.
This event is funded by the CA State Grant for Stop the Hate (CDSS), the Zellerbach Family Foundation, and the City of Oakland’s Cultural Funding Program, and sponsored by Dr. Raymond L. Eng.
