OPD Chief Armstrong Speaks on Juneteenth Shooting Death in Oakland
OPD is working with the San Francisco Police Department and Armstrong announced that they have made a couple of key arrests.
Oakland Police Department Chief LeRonne Armstrong held a press conference Monday about the shooting death of a 22-year-old San Francisco man at Lake Merritt on Saturday, June 19.
“. . . We don’t believe this was a random shooting,” he said. “. . . We believe this was directly related to group and gang violence not related to the city of Oakland,” but instead appeared to be related to the city of San Francisco.
OPD is working with the San Francisco Police Department and Armstrong announced that they have made a couple of key arrests.
Armstrong also talked about the shootings of eight other people — five males and three females — ranging in age from 16 to mid-60s. He added that there are too many guns in the city of Oakland and too many people willing to use them during events.
In a recap, he said that there were approximately 10,000 people around the entire lake on Juneteenth. About 5,000 people were around 2200 Lakeshore at 6:22 p.m. where the shooting occurred.
OPD had 28 officers assigned to the multiple events at the lake and additional sideshow brought the detail to over 60 officers. There were also two helicopters.
