Former D.C. Councilmember William Lightfoot takes us on a tour of two historic murals by acclaimed African American artist Lois Mailou Jones, housed for decades inside the Sasha Bruce Youthwork facility in Washington, D.C.
The murals, commissioned by Nannie Helen Burroughs in the 1950s, depict Africa’s history, culture and development while reflecting the connection between African Americans and the Pan-African movement. Now, Sasha Bruce is working to raise $300,000 to preserve the murals and cover the temporary relocation of young people living at the historic home during the conservation process.
