Members of the Black Student Union at Skyline High School in Oakland are honoring former Oakland A’s pitcher Michael Norris as their “Black History Inspiration.”
“He brings a new light to the students at Skyline, and he inspires us to do greater,” said sophomore Zakiya Moore, president of the student organization. “I think it would be a great experience for students to be able to see someone like this at this time.”
The theme for the Black History event, which will take place Monday, Feb. 4, is “Inspiration, Love, Peace, and Happiness.”
Norris played an instrumental role in an African organization, Black Aces, for players who have won at least 20 major league baseball games in a season.
He works with Youth Sports Nation educating and inspiring youth internationally.
Dr. Angela Wheeler, Director of Ann Weaver’s Foundation & Words of Encouragement Life Line, expressed her gratitude to the students.
It is impressive, she said, to observe students in this day and age honoring and remembering historical moments and leaders who are dedicated to the community.  “It gives us hope that students will become future leaders,” she said.
