An Inaugural Prayer Service for District 3 Councilmember-Elect Lynette Gibson McElhaney will be held at the Evergreen Baptist Church under Bishop Frank Pinkard at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, hosted by the Baptist Ministers Union, Pastors of Oakland, Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, and Bay Cities Baptist Ministers Union and the United Clergy of Oakland.
“In years past, ministers have played a pivotal role in civic engagement,” said Pastor Lawrence VanHook, vice president of the Baptist Ministers Union. “The elders of the city called us together to respond not only spiritually but civically in response to concern in our community.”
Dr. J. Alfred Smith, Sr., of Allen Temple will be the speaker and Bishop Ernestine Reems, Center of Hope, is also an invited guest who will speak blessings.
Clergy across denominations are coming together to celebrate and pray for the shalom of the city, including Dr. Gregory Payton, Pastor David Kiteley, Pastor Ken Chambers, Sr., Bishop Bob Jackson, Rev. Claude Wilson, Pastor Gerald Agee, and Pastor Joe Smith.
There will be singing, praising, and prayer for McElhaney’s journey as the new District 3 City Councilmember. A reception will be held prior to the prayer service at 1:30 p.m. and following the service.
Evergreen Baptist Church is located at 408 W. MacArthur Blvd. in Oakland.
