Khalil Saheed

A  memorial service was held recently for Khalil Shaheed, a trumpet player and widely know jazz music educator who recorded with Jimi Hendrix and performed with drummer Buddy Miles,
An overflowing crowd attended the April 22 memorial service at Nadine’s, a performance space in Jack London Square in Oakland that Shaheed had created and named after his mother.
Shaheed died March 23 after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 63.
Raised in Chicago, his music career began in the 1960s as a horn player with Miles, a founding member of the Electric Flag and  briefly, with Jimi Hendrix.
He became most well known as a music teacher and advocate. In 1994, he founded the Oaktown Jazz Workshop, an after-school program for teenagers. He led an annual music camp at Allen Temple Baptist Church in Oakland, directed the Groovemobile free summertime concerts in local parks and ran several in-school jazz programs, including ones with the San Jose Jazz Society and the San Francisco Symphony.
Shaheed is survived by his wife, Kate, and two daughters, Lina and Savannah Harris.
